Vol. 293 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Conveniences.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government the action he proposes to take to ensure that public conveniences are maintained in good order and condition.

The maintenance of public conveniences is the responsibility of the local authorities. I have made a special appeal to local authorities to increase their efforts to secure better standards and I have advised them on suitable guidelines in the matter.

Would the Minister accept that many local authorities are remiss in maintaining public conveniences in good order in relation to mechanical operations and hygiene aspects, as has been illustrated by complaints over the last few months?

This matter has been brought to my notice. When I was a member of a county council it was brought to my notice and I raised it at the appropriate place, with the county council officials. There is nothing that can be done at departmental level except send a reminder to the county council to do something which they should do. I have done that on numerous occasions.

Is the Minister satisfied that a reminder is sufficient?

Unfortunately there is nothing further I can do. I have no authority to instruct them. It is a matter for the local authority members to tell them what they should do if they are remiss in having it attended to.
