Vol. 293 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Litter Checks.

19.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government if any inspectors have been appointed by his Department with responsibility to check on litter and the cleanliness of city streets generally.

The prevention and abatement of litter is the responsibility of local authorities. The appointment of inspectors to deal with the problem is not a matter for my Department. I understand that Dublin Corporation employ six litter wardens. I might add that I have on numerous occasions and as recently as 18th May, 1976 written to local authorities to express my concern about litter on city streets and elsewhere and to remind local authorities of their responsibilities in this regard.
