Vol. 293 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Rescue Facilities.

28.

andMr. Andrews asked the Minister for Finance if he is satisfied that the facilities for rescue work at Dún Laoghaire Harbour as provided by the Office of Public Works are of the highest attainable standards.

The Commissioners of Public Works, in common with other large harbour authorities, have no function in relation to the provision of rescue services. Dún Laoghaire harbour itself and its installations and facilities are maintained to a high standard.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, I do not doubt his honesty in this matter but he may have been misinformed. The Office of Public Works have some part of the rescue work in the harbour. There is some local ill-feeling there against the Office of Public Works which a little goodwill on the part of that office would help to remove and thus help to ensure a better service. The lifeboat people are very dedicated and doing all they can. Immense ill will can spring up from misunderstanding. Will the Parliamentary Secretary use his good offices to try to clear away this irritant?

In reply to the Deputy, we have no function in this matter, but in the event of an accident we would make the boat available if we have it.

That is not acceptable. They have some responsibility.
