Vol. 295 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Food Additives.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if, as a result of recent press reports regarding the danger of certain food additives, he intends to have this matter investigated.

The press reports which the Deputy refers to relate to the presence of antibiotic residues in foodstuffs as a result of the treatment of animals with antibiotics and antibacterial substances. This problem has been investigated. I should explain that to control the presence of antibiotic residues in foodstuffs necessitates the control of the use of these substances in animals. This matter is primarily one for the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries who is preparing regulations under the Animal Remedies Act, 1956, to control the sale of antibiotics and other antibacterial substances.

My Department, advised by the Food Advisory Committee, maintain a close liaison with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on this subject.
