asked the Minister for Social Welfare the amount paid in contributions by employees towards the cost of the pay-related benefit scheme; and the total amount paid out in benefit from the introduction of the scheme to date.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pay-Related Benefit Scheme.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health (Mr. R. Barry) (for the Minister for Social Welfare)
As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.
Following is the statement:

In addition to expenditure on pay-related benefit, expenditure was also incurred in administering the scheme. This amounted to £414,000, £1,230,000 and £1,683,000 respectively in the years in question.
Since there are only two figures involved perhaps the Parliamentary Secretary would let me have the information now.
For the nine months concerned in 1974 contributions by employees to the pay-related benefit scheme amounted to £2,950,000 while the expenditure amounted to £2,515,000. For 1975 the contributions by employees amounted to £6,798,000 while the expenditure amounted to £9,350,000. The figures for 1976 were £7,796,000 and £14,338,000 respectively.
Unfortunately my question was not framed correctly but that is not the fault of the Parliamentary Secretary. What I intended to elicit was the amount contributed by both employers and employees. However, a rough estimate of the total income would be £54 million while the payments would have been in the region of £25 million.
