Vol. 296 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Term Bulls.

24.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will increase the number of special term bulls this year as many farmers were disappointed last year due to the reduction in the number of bulls given out.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will increase the number of special term bulls this season in view of the demand from many farmers throughout the west of Ireland.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 24 and 25 together. The position is that, while the number of special term bulls to be located this year is likely to be somewhat less than last year, I am satisfied that all suitable applicants who need bulls will be supplied.

Is the Minister aware that there were many disappointed farmers throughout the west last year particularly because in the past those who had bulls received replacements? Last year bulls were sold off after three or four seasons. Those people unfortunately discovered that there was no replacement for them. I ask the Minister to try, if possible, to increase the number of special term bulls.

I have to say to my good friend, Deputy McLaughlin, that exactly the same number of bulls were provided in Sligo last year as were provided the year before.

What about this year?

It was the same in 1975 and 1976.

What about 1977? Will the number be more or less? That is what the Minister's good friend and colleague, Deputy McLaughlin, wants to know.

I gave the Deputy the answer to that.

The Minister gave it for 1975 and 1976.

And for this year.
