andMr. Farrell asked the Taoiseach the number of persons employed in the footwear industry in each of the years 1974, 1975 and 1976.

The total number of persons engaged in establishments classified to the boot and shoe, wholesale factories, industry, for the purposes of the annual census of industrial production, were 4,800 in 1974, 3,700 in 1975 and 3,400 in 1976.

The figures for 1974 and 1975 are averages of the numbers engaged in a week in March, June, September and December, while the figure for 1976 is an average of those engaged in a week in March, June and September which is the latest date for which the information is available. All the figures given are estimates and are subject to revision in the light of the results of the annual censuses for the years in question. The figures cover administrative, clerical and technical staff and industrial workers but they exclude outside piece-workers.
