Vol. 298 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Community School.

5.

asked the Minister for Education when construction will start on the new Bailieboro community school, County Cavan.

It is not possible, at this stage, to indicate when work on the proposed community school for Bailieboro will commence.

Is the Minister aware that there was a long delay until the Minister for Finance sanctioned the purchase of the vocational school in Bailieboro by the committee of agriculture? Would the Minister consider speeding up the whole process with regard to the community school because of this delay?

I would be very happy to do that, but there are two interests involved, the Cavan County Committee of Agriculture and the local VEC. Only last week we found out that the formal documents for the purchase of the vocational school by the committee of agriculture had not been signed. When they have been signed I will speed it up.

Is the Minister saying that the only thing holding it up is the failure to sign the documents of transfer?

If the documents of transfer are signed initiation of negotiations by the Department for the acquisition of the Presentation Schools in Bailieboro can be commenced immediately.

Is the Minister aware that there is total agreement between the convent school authorities and the VEC in regard to the provision of a community school as quickly as possible?

I know there is such agreement.

Is the Minister saying that there is some legal snag in the deal between the committee of agriculture and the VEC?

I understand the formal deeds have not been drawn up. There should be no hold-up afterwards.
