Vol. 298 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport Service.

9.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that children (names supplied) in County Tipperary cannot attend Powerstown national school because of overcrowding; and if he will arrange transport for them to Lisronagh national school in the same parish.

The question as to whether the children concerned should be allowed transport to Lisronagh national school, because of an accommodation problem in Powerstown national school, is being investigated and I will notify the Deputy of the outcome in due course.

I am not sure if the Parliamentary Secretary is aware that a tragedy has since occurred through the sudden death on St. Patricks morning of the father of this young family. This would seem to make more imminent the need for transport for the children to Lisronagh national school in the same parish instead of to Powerstown where they have been refused because of overcrowding in the area. Would the Parliamentary Secretary ensure that every possible haste is made to alleviate the burden on this unfortunate woman now left with this family?

In view of what the Deputy has said both now and privately, I will do everything possible to have a speedy decision taken in this case.

10.

asked the Minister for Education why a person (name supplied) in County Sligo was refused transport to Culfodda national school.

The child in question was refused transport to Culfodda national school because she lives only 0.5 miles from Ballymote girls' national school, whereas Culfodda national school is 5.5 miles from her home.
