asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the Exchequer receipts in 1975 and 1976 from (a) PAYE (b) other income tax on wages and salaries (c) beer (d) spirits (e) cigarettes and tobacco (f) petrol and (g) oil; and the estimated receipts in 1977.

The approximate net receipts of tax under the headings requested are estimated as follows:

NOTES: 1. The figures for receipts from beer, spirits, tobacco, petrol and oil (hydrocarbon, other sorts) are mainly comprised of receipts from excise duties but also include receipts from the remaining elements of the protective customs duties on those goods.

2. The reduction in receipts from "other income tax on wages and salaries" in 1976 and 1977 (row (b)) arose because the remuneration of public servants and other employees previously outside the PAYE system was brought within the system from 6 April 1976. Part of the increase in PAYE receipts (row(a)) is for the same reason.
