1. The figure of £84 million in 1976 includes an element of income tax paid by companies for 1975-76, the last year for which companies were, in general, liable for income tax. It also includes three half-yearly instalments of Schedule D income tax paid by individuals, following the advancement, from 1st January, 1977 to 1st October, 1976, of the date of payment of the first instalment of income tax for 1976-77.
