Vol. 298 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prisoner Maintenance.

168.

asked the Minister for Justice the approximate weekly or annual cost of maintaining a prisoner in any State prison.

The cost can be estimated in various ways. In line with the answers given to a number of previous parliamentary questions on the subject, the cost has been computed on this occasion by taking the total amount voted for prisons, including an estimate of the amount in Votes other than the Prisons Vote, less the amount voted for capital services and dividing the total by the estimated daily average number of prisoners for the year. On that basis the answer is approximately £107 per week.
