Vol. 298 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Water Supply.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious position in Kenmare, County Kerry arising from the inadequacy of the town's water supply; and if he will make a loan available to Kerry County Council to improve the scheme in the event of such an application being made.

It is a matter for the sanitary authority to remedy defects or deficiencies in any of their water supply schemes. I am informed that shortages have been experienced in Kenmare during dry weather periods. I understand, however, that the county council carried out some works last year which resulted in an improvement of the situation and that they will shortly be submitting proposals for a water supply scheme in the Kilgarvan area which, inter alia, will further augment the present supply to Kenmare.

The question of providing a loan does not arise until the scheme has been fully planned and approved.

Could the Minister say whether the loan application would then be approved?

I could not say that. The proposal would have to be considered but, normally, in matters of this kind if they go to the trouble of making a case as they have done, it will receive favourable consideration. I could not tell the Deputy now in advance of the proposal.
