Vol. 298 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Overseas Operations.

16.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs when it is proposed to resume overseas operations with the United Nations.

The Government have decided in principle that it would be possible to make available, if required, a contingent for service with the United Nations peace-keeping forces, and have so informed the Secretary General of the United Nations. It is for the United Nations authorities to decide when and if to request an Irish contingent for service in specific circumstances; any such request would then be considered by the Government.

I should add that, as the Deputy is no doubt aware, we have continued to provide a number of officers and men for service with the UN in the Middle East and Cyprus since the withdrawal of the contingent in May, 1974.
