Vol. 298 No. 7

Written Answers. - Emigration Statistics.

99.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of people who emigrated in each of the last 20 years.

The only available information relates to net emigration, that is the outflow less the inflow. Estimates of net migration are compiled for intercensal periods by relating successive population figures compiled from censuses of population to date for births and deaths in the same periods. The following are the average annual net emigration figures in each intercensal period since 1956: 1956 to 1961—42,400; 1961 to 1966— 16,121; 1966 to 1971—10,781. For the period since the last census, available indicators suggest that there has been a small net inflow, that is, immigration.
