Vol. 298 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

106.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the reason for the delay each week in paying unemployment benefit to a person (details supplied) in County Meath, in view of the fact that other men who sign at Summerhill Garda station get their benefit on Saturday while this person has to wait until the following Monday or Tuesday.

Delays in postal payments of unemployment benefit to the person concerned seem to be attributable to the local postal arrangements and the matter has been taken up with the Department of Posts and Telegraphs. In the meantime, the person concerned is being advised that he may have payment of his benefit made to him in cash at his local employment office every Friday.

107.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a decision will be reached on the application for unemployment assistance by a person in County Offaly (name supplied) who applied five months ago.

The application for unemployment assistance made on 15th November, 1976 was disallowed by a deciding officer on 17th December, 1976 on the ground that the weekly rate of means of the person concerned exceeded the statutory limit for entitlement appropriate to his case. He appealed against this decision and an appeals officer on 21st March, 1977 reduced the weekly rate of his means assessment. As a result he became entitled to unemployment assistance at the weekly rate of £3.55 from the date of his initial application which has been increased to £4.80 from 30th March, 1977. Payment of all assistance due was made to the applicant on 31st March, 1977 and further payments will continue as they fall due.

108.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when pay-related benefit will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Meath.

The weekly rate of pay related benefit payable on the disability benefit claim of the person referred to by the Deputy was limited to £1.20 a week being the difference between his reckonable weekly earnings in the relevant income-tax year and the weekly rate of flat-rate benefit payable. All pay-related benefit due on his claim from 9th December, 1976 to 31st January, 1977 has been paid.

109.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a maternity grant will be paid to a person in County Meath (details supplied) who applied three months ago.

There is no record of the receipt in my Department of the claim for maternity grant referred to by the Deputy. A form on which to claim the grant has been sent to the person concerned and when this is returned payment of the amount of the grant will be made.
