Vol. 298 No. 7

Written Answers. - Drink, Cigarette and Petrol Prices.

125.

asked the Minister for Finance the likely price increase in (a) a pint of beer (b) a glass of spirits (c) a packet of cigarettes and (d) a gallon of petrol if an additional £57 million were to be raised through indirect taxation.

126.

asked the Minister for Finance the percentage increase in the consumer price index that would result if an additional £57 million were to be raised through indirect taxation.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 125 and 126 together.

It is estimated that an increase of 5p in the duty content of (a) each pint of beer (b) each glass of spirits (c) each packet of 20 standard plain cigarettes and (d) each gallon of petrol would produce additional revenue to the Exchequer of £57 million in a full year and would add 1.9 per cent to the consumer price index.
