Vol. 299 No. 1

Written Answers. - Unemployment Benefit and Assistance.

67.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when unemployment benefit will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Meath who has been signing since February, 1977.

A decision cannot be given on the claim for unemployment benefit of the person concerned as the question of the insurability of her employment during the contribution year governing her entitlement to the benefit is the subject of an appeal. When the appeals officer's decision becomes available, the claim for unemployment benefit will be dealt with without delay.

68.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange to have full unemployment assistance paid to a person in County Cork (name supplied).

The full rate of unemployment assistance is not payable to the person concerned as his weekly rate of means which are derived from the benefit or privilege of free or partly free board and lodgings enjoyed by him in his parents' home has been assessed at £7.75. He is receiving unemployment assistance at the weekly rate of £2.05 being the maximum weekly rate of assistance payable to a person resident in a rural area who has no dependants (£9.80) less his weekly rate of means. The person concerned has been notified of the assessment of means in his case and of his right to appeal.

69.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the very long delay in paying unemployment assistance to a person (name supplied) in County Kerry.

A claim to unemployment assistance made on the 19th December, 1975, by the person concerned was disallowed by a deciding officer on the ground that he had failed to give particulars, as required, of his means. He appealed against this decision but an appeals officer disallowed his appeal.

On the 2nd December, 1976, he renewed his claim for unemployment assistance but up to the present it has not been possible to give a decision on this claim because the Social Welfare officer to whom his case has been referred for a report on his circumstances has not yet succeeded in contacting him. The officer has already called twice on him but he was not available. The officer has arranged to call again this week and has informed the claimant to this effect. A decision will be given in the case as soon as the officer's report is received.
