Vol. 299 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Recruit Training Cost.

26.

asked the Minister for Justice the estimated cost of training a Garda recruit.

Any attempt to put a figure on the cost of training Garda recruits would involve a number of arbitrary assumptions and, in particular, an assumption concerning the number of recruits trained over a given period. This is because a substantial part of the cost arises from outgoings that, within broad limits, are fixed and do not vary directly with the number of recruits under training in any given period. These fixed costs amount to £360,000 a year.

A recruit is paid from the time he begins training and the total emoluments of a recruit during his 26-week period of training are approximately £1,300. In addition he is issued with a complete uniform which costs approximately £200.
