Vol. 299 No. 9

Written Answers. - Fluoridation Programme.

10.

asked the Minister for Health if he is satisfied with the fluoridation programme to date; if any difficulty has been encountered in the supply of fluorine; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The fluoridation of piped water supplies is still regarded as one of the most effective measures yet discovered in the field of preventive dentistry. In general, I am satisfied with the progress made to date in equipping water supplies for the process. Fluoride acid supplies difficulties experienced in 1974 and 1975 have been resolved and adequate supplies of acid have been available on a regular basis since February, 1976.

The major sources of supply serve about 75 per cent of those who are getting fluoridated water. On the whole, there are now few problems concerning these major supplies. A large number of smaller sources of supply serve the remaining 25 per cent of those on fluoridated water. There are currently practical problems in some of these in maintaining the level of fluoridation within the recommended levels.

The process of fluoridation is kept under regular review and a circular recently issued from the Department of Local Government to local authorities reminding them of the need to maintain fluoridation at prescribed levels.
