Vol. 299 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial School Buildings.

13.

andMr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Education if he will make arrangements as a matter of urgency, for the acquisition of some or more of the buildings formerly used as industrial schools so as to provide sufficient places of detention for young offenders because many of them cannot at present be detained although they are convicted of serious offences.

The question of providing secure facilities for a small number of young offenders who cannot be contained in existing special schools is being urgently pursued by my Department in consultation with the other Departments concerned.

Buildings formerly used as industrial schools are not likely to prove suitable for the purpose in question.
