Vol. 299 No. 11

Written Answers. - Drug Squad Rank.

23.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the widespread increase in the abuse of drugs throughout the country, he will as a matter of urgency (a) upgrade the rank of the head of the Drug Squad from Detective Sergeant to Inspector and (b) increase the number of personnel directly attached to the Drug Squad.

The statistics in respect of drugs offences during the past four years do not reflect a widespread increase in such offences. In the years ended 30th September, 1973 and 30th September, 1974 prosecutions for drugs offences were taken against 270 and 293 persons respectively. Since 1975 the crime statistics have been compiled on the basis of calendar years and in the years 1975 and 1976 the figure for prosecutions were 333 and 289 respectively.

The strength and staffing levels of specialised units like the Drug Squad are matters for decision from time to time by the Garda authorities in the light of overall resources and requirements. I am informed that no immediate change is proposed in either the strength or staffing of the squad.
