Vol. 299 No. 11

Written Answers. - Garda Clerical Personnel.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that members of the Garda Síochána who at present carry out clerical duties are being discriminated against in regard to salary and remuneration; and if he will take steps to ensure that they are brought in line with other members of the force.

Members of the Garda Síochána who perform clerical duties are not discriminated against in regard to salary. They have the same rate of pay as other members of the force of the same rank and, besides, a number of clerks—namely, those employed as district or divisional clerks—are paid an additional allowance. However, clerks and some other groups have not the same opportunities as many of their colleagues have to earn extra pay for overtime or for "unsocial" hours worked at night, at weekends and on public holidays. While this can create a problem in certain circumstances it is not one that admits of any easy solution.
