asked the Minister for Defence (a) when construction commenced on the new high security prison at the Curragh, County Kildare (b) when the work was completed (c) the cost of the project (d) when it will be used and (e) whether it will be under civilian control.

(a) July, 1974; (b) October, 1976; (c) £350,000 approximately— including the provision of alternative accommodation for military personnel displaced; (d) The premises would be used as a place of military custody in the event that the number of civilian prisoners to be transferred to military custody should at a future time, exceed the capacity of the existing detention barracks. It has not been necessary, up to the present, to use the premises for this purpose; (e) The premises are and will be under military control.
