Vol. 299 No. 11

Written Answers. - Herring Stocks.

38.

asked the Minister for Fisheries the up-to-date position in relation to (a) stocks of herring and (b) the tonnage allowed for catch to Irish fishermen.

There are at present no quotas applicable to herring fishing by Irish fishermen. However, in the interests of conservation, herring fishing in the Celtic Sea has been prohibited for the remainder of this year. The west of Scotland herring fishery, including an area within Irish fishery limits west and northwest Donegal, will be closed for the month of June, 1977, while the question of imposing restrictions on other herring fisheries, for example in the Irish Sea, is under consideration.
