asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy (a) the total number of insurance companies at present operating in this country, (b) the total assets of these companies as per their most recent balance sheet, (c) the net taxable profits of these companies during their most recent financial year, (d) the total number of directors of these companies and (e) the total amounts of emoluments paid to such directors during the most recent financial year.

(a) At present there are 44 companies, including foreign companies, actively engaged in writing insurance business in this country.

(b) The total amount of assets of these companies as per their most recent balance sheets was £23,407,017,623.

(c) The net taxable profits of these companies during their most recent financial year were £451,838,247.

(d) Total number of directors at end of 1976 was 482.

(e) Total emoluments paid to such directors in 1976 were £3,175,800.

The above information does not include Lloyds which is not a company and in relation to which the information at (b) and (c) is not in any event available.
