Vol. 301 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tyre Regulations.

429.

asked the Minister for the Environment if tyres are permitted for use on roads without speed marks or other information indicating the proper conditions under which they should be used; if the EEC has announced any regulations controlling such use; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The statutory regulations under the Road Traffic Acts relating to tyres are confined to general safety requirements. An EEC proposal for a directive on tyres in the motor vehicle type approval series is at present before the council's working group on economic questions. The effect of such a directive, if adopted, would be that member states may not refuse or prohibit the sale, registration, entry into service or use of vehicles with tyres marked and fitted in accordance with the terms of the directive.
