Vol. 301 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Car Seat Belts.

11.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of deaths due to road accidents; and whether he is contemplating legislation to make the wearing of seat belts compulsory.

12.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals in regard to the compulsory wearing of seat belts.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 11 and 12 together. The latest official figures available show that the number of road accident fatalities in this country for the nine months ended 30th September, 1977 was 386. As regards road safety generally, I am naturally concerned that every effort should be made to reduce the level of deaths and injuries from road accidents, and various possible measures, including the compulsory wearing of seat belts, will be examined.

Does the Minister accept that recent statistics show that the wearing of seat belts can result in a significant reduction in road deaths and serious injuries?

I have said that the compulsory wearing of seat belts is being examined at the moment. The Deputy asked me if I was aware that the wearing of seat belts reduces the number of accidents. I cannot give actual figures but I am aware of what the Deputy said.

In view of the fact that the Minister is aware of this situation can he tell us how long the examination will take before action results?

It is under review.

That is quite true. The examination is taking place and is proceeding with the greatest possible haste.

What does the greatest possible haste mean? When can we expect action?

I have no intention of setting a date.
