Written Answers. - Youth Job Opportunities.

465.

asked the Minister for Health the steps he is taking to create job opportunities for young people, particularly school leavers, in the South Tipperary area; the progress to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A total of 18 new permanent posts have been approved in respect of South Tipperary. To date four trainee psychiatric nurses, four clerks, two nurses and one trainee speech therapist have taken up duty. One telephonist is due to take up duty on 1st December next and four additional nurses will be recruited when the new coronary care unit in St. Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel opens which is expected to take place before the end of the year. A dental attendant will be appointed as soon as another dental surgeon takes up duty and the Local Appointments Commission has a competition on hands for an anaesthetist post in the County Hospital, Cashel.

I should mention that out of moneys made available for temporary employment in carrying out minor renovations, decorations and improvements, fifteen thousand, three hundred pounds had been spent in the South Tipperary area up to third week in October.
