Vol. 301 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Telephone Subscriber.

475.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider alleviating the financial burden of a subscriber (name supplied) in Dublin who, while needing a telephone, is apparently in acute financial distress and unable to meet to the full his current bill; and if he has any discretion in the matter.

The statutory regulations governing telephone service provide that all fees and charges payable by a subscriber shall be paid as soon as an account is rendered to him. In this case outward service was withdrawn because of the subscriber's failure to pay an overdue account and he has not made any approach to the Department about the matter. In the normal course the line would now be put totally off service. However, the Department are prepared to leave in-coming service open on the line for a further short period and will be in touch with the subscriber about arrangements for clearing the account.
