Vol. 301 No. 10

Medical Practitioners Bill, 1977: Fifth Stage.

Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

On the passing of this Bill I am very grateful to the House for the manner in which it has received this very important legislation and the very detailed, assiduous, careful and reasonable attention the House has given to it. I do not say that in any ritualistic, formalistic way. I mean it quite sincerely. Deputy Boland, Deputy O'Connell and Deputy O'Hanlon made very significant and important contributions to the Bill and I hope that in return they will recognise that where they put forward suggestions or proposals which seemed reasonable, practical and acceptable, I did not hesitate to accept them.

I would like to reciprocate. I found the Minister most reasonable on every amendment we put forward. He was most constructive and went more than half way to meet our wishes. I wish to express my appreciation for that.

I agree. I found the Bill was discussed in a very amiable and constructive way. I must say that it is unfair—and I am not suggesting that this is the only Minister who does it or who has done it in the past—to enter major amendments, the concept of which I am not opposed to, on the morning of a Report Stage debate. Today such an amendment brought in the dental profession. I do not think that is fair and should be avoided wherever possible.

We will try to do better in future.

We will try to help the Minister do better.

Question put and agreed to.
