Vol. 302 No. 2

Written Answers. - Kerry Hip Operations.

332.

asked the Minister for Health the reason for the delay for hip operations for patients in County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Orthopaedic services for patients from County Kerry are provided under the general service of the Southern Health Board at St. Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital, Gurranebraher. The position regarding the waiting period for County Kerry is generally in line with that for Cork patients.

The number of persons referred for hip replacement operations in recent years has greatly increased, due to the success of this type of surgery.

A proposal from the Southern Health Board for the provision of a 60 bed orthopaedic unit in conjunction with the proposed new Tralee general hospital is at present under consideration in my Department.
