Vol. 302 No. 5

Written Answers. - Meath Firms.

276.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the terms under which a firm (name supplied) in County Meath was given State assistance; if this firm has indicated its intention to move the industry to Dublin; and if such action would be contrary to the terms of its IDA grant.

The Industrial Development Authority negotiates grant agreements with industrial promoters on a confidential basis and it is not normal practice to release details of such agreements.

I understand that the company referred to by the Deputy was taken over by a Dublin concern in June, 1975, and that the latter has indicated its intention to expand its production and relocate the Kells operation in Dublin. The authority did not encourage the transfer.

Grant assistance has been approved for the company's expansion plans on terms which involve the effective repayment of the grant moneys paid towards the Kells operation. I understand that all the employees at Kells have been offered employment in the Dublin plant.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he is aware that a firm (name supplied) in County Meath employs only five persons; and if this is in accordance with the terms of its IDA grant.

I am aware that this firm employed five persons on a recent date. The Industrial Development Authority has informed me that its agreement with the company requires that a significantly larger number of jobs be created. The authority has discussed the matter with the firm and has been assured that initiatives are being taken by the promoters which should result in a significant increase in employment. The authority will maintain pressure to have the employment commitments honoured.
