Vol. 302 No. 5

Written Answers. - Undertakers' Suppliers.

280.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if the recent increase of 20 per cent announced by undertakers' suppliers has been (a) recommended by the National Prices Commission, and (b) sanctioned by him.

I am aware that a firm in the west of the country has announced an increase of 20 per cent in the price of coffins supplied to undertakers in the area. This price increase was not recommended by the National Prices Commission, nor sanctioned by me. The increase is being investigated to ascertain if it was justified by increased production costs.

I should add that under the terms of the Prices and charges (Notification of Increases) Order, 1976, which was made on the recommendation of the National Prices Commission, manufacturing firms employing not more than 50 persons are not required to give me advance notice of proposals to increase their prices. The firm in question falls within this category.
