Vol. 302 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Primary Route.

223.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amounts of money spent each year for the past three years on the improvement of the national primary route, Dublin-Long-ford-Castlebar, to the West; the mileage thus improved; and the plans he has for the further improvement of this route besides those works already in progress.

Road fund grants totalling £292,784 and £240,000 were spent in 1975 and 1976 respectively on improvement works on this route. It is estimated that expenditure in 1977 on improvement works will be of the order of £600,000. These grants were related to specific improvement works, including the construction of two new bridges, on approximately eight miles of roadway. They do not, of course, include the annual up-keep programmes undertaken by the local authorities concerned. The planning of further improvement works on this road is a continuing process. Current planning provides for by-passes for Chapelizod, Lucan and Mullingar and a new alignment between Palmerstown and Ballydowd in County Dublin. The timing of these and other works is dependent on the availability of land, their priority taking overall national needs into account and the level of finance that will be at my disposal.
