Vol. 302 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tory Islanders Alternative Accommodation.

227.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the plight of people (names supplied) in Tory Island who have indicated their intention to leave the island and live on the mainland but are unable to find proper housing accommodation; and if he will make funds available to Donegal Council Council for housing schemes to meet the needs of this special case.

I am aware of the difficulties which such families can encounter in seeking rehousing on the mainland. The tenancies of all dwellings let by Donegal county council must be allocated in accordance with the approved scheme of letting priorities made to them under section 60 of the Housing Act 1966. It is open to the council to consider applications for rehousing from the families in accordance with their letting priorities scheme. It is a matter entirely for the council to make a decision on the rehousing of individual applicants, within the overall resources available to them. A decision on the amount to be allocated to them for local authority housing in 1978 will be taken by me following the Government's decision on the budget allocation for this purpose in the 1978 Public Capital Programme.
