Vol. 302 No. 9

Written Answers. - Howth Fishery Harbour.

143.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he will state in relation to Question No. 202 of 7th December, 1977, the specific recommendations of Mr. C.G. Bjuke with regard to the design for a fishery harbour at Howth, County Dublin; the detailed investigations that have been carried out in the intervening period; and the essential modifications that were made as a result of these investigations.

Following receipt of Mr. Bjuke's report in October, 1959, certain hydraulic model tests and sub-soil investigations were carried out and in the light of the results Mr. Bjuke's recommendations were modified by him in consultation with the Office of Public Works. The final recommendations for Howth fishery harbour are embodied in Office of Public Works plans entitled Fishery Harbour Centre Howth—Stages I and II. I have arranged for copies of the plans to be supplied to the Deputy. Mr. Bjuke's original report is now out of print but I understand a copy is available in the Dáil Library.

asked the Minister for Fisheries the extent to which Stage I of the proposed fisheries harbour at Howth, County Dublin, will enhance the facilities for tourist and recreational interests and in particular the facilities which will be available to existing users, for example, Howth Sailing Club.

The amenity and tourist attractions of Howth have been fully borne in mind in the formulation of the development plan for the fishery harbour there. Discussions have taken place with representatives of Howth Yacht Club. The question of further enhancing the tourist and recreational amenities at Howth is of course primarily a matter for the appropriate promotional bodies.
