Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Protection of Employment.

30.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that some firms are avoiding their obligations under the Protection of Employment Act, 1977, by putting a number of employees on "lay-off"; and if it is his intention to propose amendments to the "lay-off" provisions of the Redundancy Payments Act, 1967, or the "qualifying numbers" in the 1977 Act.

I have no evidence that the requirements of the Protection of Employment Act, 1977 are being avoided in that way. If the Deputy supplies me with such evidence I will be glad to have the matter examined. The question of amending the legislation could be considered in the light of such examination.
