Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Oil Rig Workers.

31.

asked the Minister for Labour if he intends to introduce legislation to protect oil rig workers in waters around this country's coast.

I propose to introduce legislation regarding standards for the health and welfare of persons employed on offshore installations in the exploration and exploitation of our natural resources. In addition to setting out general safety provisions giving me power to make technical regulations, the Bill will provide, on somewhat similar lines as for factories, for worker participation through the appointment of safety representatives or the election of safety committees at the installations.

Preparation of the Bill is well advanced and I would hope to bring it to the House early in the next session.
