Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Disabled Persons' Employment.

32.

asked the Minister for Labour if he proposes to introduce a scheme to encourage the employment of disabled persons.

I am preparing a scheme, which I hope to put into operation next year, requiring public departments, local authorities, state boards and enterprises to employ a quota of disabled people.

I would hope that this example in the public sector will be a strong encouragement to employers generally to consider handicapped persons in filling suitable vacancies. It is fair to say that certain employers are receptive to the claims of handicapped workers and a strong liaison exists between the National Rehabilitation Board and the National Manpower Service in this regard.
