Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Early Retirement.

40.

asked the Minister for Labour the proposals, if any, he has for the introduction of phased early retirement in Ireland.

The issue of early retirement is under consideration in my Department in the general context of a variety of possible measures which might relieve the unemployment situation. The issue, so far as it affects employment opportunities for young workers, is being looked at by the employment action team. The question of early retirement is, of course, one which affects a number of other Departments, notably the Department of Social Welfare. The pensions aspect of early retirement is being examined by the Minister for Social Welfare as part of the broader debate on pensions questions arising out of the Green Paper on a national income-related pensions scheme.
