Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Second Level Education Incentives.

47.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any plans to introduce a scheme to act as an incentive for students from less well off backgrounds to remain in second level education.

The free post-primary education scheme was introduced in 1967 with the aim of encouraging young people to remain in second level education.

At the same time a free transport scheme was initiated to second level schools and aid towards the cost of schoolbooks was introduced in respect of "less well off" pupils. These measures have enabled pupils from less well off backgrounds to pursue a full course in second level education.

The scheme is kept under continuous review with the aim of improving the scope and quality of our free educational services.
