Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

96.

asked the Minister for Health the total amount of public funds devoted to youth services; and the total number and cost of social workers exclusively engaged in youth work in the Dublin city and county area for each of the past five years.

In so far as public expenditure on youth services is concerned I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to him by the Minister for Education, on 22nd November, 1977. No social work staff employed by bodies under the aegis of my Department are specifically devoted to the provision of youth services.

Arising out of the interim Report of the Task Force on Child Care Services, pilot neighbourhood youth projects are being established in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. These experimental projects are seen as being primarily an extension of family support services and are not regarded as part of the usual youth services. There has, to date, been only incidental expenditure, of the order of £1,000 on these projects.
