Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Comparative Prices Dissemination.

138.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the steps he has taken since 5th July, 1977, to give full dissemination at least once a week to radio, television and newspapers, in accordance with Government policy, of comparative prices of the most frequently purchased consumer goods in supermarkets etc., in different parts of the country.

I have arranged with RTE that each week the retail prices in Dublin of a range of vegetables will be broadcast. This arrangement has been in operation since early November. Certain fruit prices are about to be included in this weekly broadcast and it is hoped to begin a monthly broadcast of average meat prices in the larger centres of population in the near future.

I raised the question of the dissemination of comparative prices of the most frequently purchased consumer goods with the National Prices Commission at my meeting with them on 27th July, 1977. The question of further dissemination of price information will be examined when I am considering the report of the commission on this and other issues raised by me with them at that meeting and in the light of an evaluation of the results of the current broadcast of information by RTE.
