Vol. 303 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Monuments Legislation.

19.

andMr. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he has any proposals to bring the National Monuments legislation up-todate; and, if so, in what respect.

Proposals to bring the National Monuments legislation up to date are under consideration by the Commissioners of Public Works. Until these proposals have been submitted to and approved by the Government it would be premature to give any details.

Can the Minister of State say when he expects the Commissioners to be in a position to submit their proposals to the Government?

Schemes to replace these Acts have been drafted and interested Government Departments have been consulted. As soon as all the information has been compiled it will be submitted to the Government.

Would the Minister of State agree that, in so far as the preservation of objects within the State is concerned and the assurance that articles of importance in our national heritage do not leave the country or come into the hands of people who are not qualified to take care of them, legislation such as is contemplated is urgent?

Does the Minister of State agree that it is urgent?
