Vol. 303 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

324.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the inadequacy of the underground cabling for the connection of new telephones in the Dunboyne area of County Meath; and if he will outline his plans for the augmentation of underground cabling on each of the main routes or areas connected to the Dunboyne exchange.

The answer to the first part of the question is yes. As regards the second part, the plan is to carry out main underground cabling schemes on the main Dublin Road as far as Clonee, on the Sheaf of Wheat and main Navan roads as far as the junction of Trim Road, and on the the Dunboyne-Maynooth Road. Owing to the heavy arrears of underground cabling work still remaining in the 01 area, it is likely to be a considerable time before the shortage in Dunboyne is corrected.

325.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the names and addresses of applicants who had telephones installed since January 1977 in the Kilkenny city and county areas; and the dates on which these installations were sanctioned.

It would be contrary to established practice to quote the names and addresses of the persons concerned. The installations were authorised roughly two to four months before service was provided.

326.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he will be in a position to quote terms for telephones in Tullamore town, County Offaly; and the number that will be offered connection within the next four months.

The way will be clear to arrange a general clearance of waiting applications for telephones in Tullamore next year when major extensions of the exchanges in Portlaoise and Tullamore are expected to be completed. Terms will be quoted to about 40 waiting applicants within the next four months.

327.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants that will receive quotations for telephones in (a) Edenderry and (b) Birr, County Offaly, in the next three months.

The number will depend on how many applications are received during the next three months which warrant high priority attention.
