Vol. 303 No. 1

Written Answers. - Milk Regulations.

330.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if any regulations exist to control the composition, description and labelling of condensed milk and dried milk intended for human consumption; and if he will consider making regulations in this matter similar to S.I. No. 928 of 1977 recently made in Northern Ireland.

No specific national regulations exist to control the composition, description and labelling of condensed milk and dried milk intended for human consumption. Under the Merchandise Marks Acts, 1887-1970 any false description of a product is an offence and packets of pre-packed foods, including condensed milk, are required to show the quantity contained therein.

EEC Council Directive 76/118/EEC makes provision for the definition, designation, manufacture and labelling of partly or wholly dehydrated preserved milk and the additives permitted therein. Member states are required to adapt their national laws or to provide legislation to give effect to the terms of the directive and steps are being taken in my Department to make the necessary implementing national regulations.
