Following the end of each financial year local authorities make a return to my Department which indicates, inter alia, the average number of persons employed by them during the year in question. The last year for which a complete return is available is the year ended 31 December 1975. The total number of persons employed by each local authority for the years ended 31 December 1974, 31 December 1975 and 31 December 1976 where figures for that year are available, is as follows:
