Vol. 303 No. 2

Financial Resolutions, 1978: Financial Statement, Budget, 1978. - “Guaranteed Irish” campaign

Still in the context of job-creation, I should like to refer to the "Guaranteed Irish" campaign announced recently by the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy. This is an area where each individual can help in job-creation. This cannot be too strongly stressed: everyone is involved. The Government's aim is to induce, over a three-year period, a 3p in the £ switch in spending from foreign to home-produced goods, yielding about 10,000 extra jobs. The provision in the 1978 Estimates for this scheme is £680,000—a trebling of the 1977 expenditure of £227,000. This expenditure may be relatively small in relation to the other provisions for job-creation, but there is no gainsaying the tremendous boost to employment which would result from even a relatively small shift in purchases from imported to home-produced goods.
