Vol. 303 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin Community Action Project.

245.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, in view of the fact that community representatives in the north central area of Dublin city have spent more than two years negotiating for a project in their area, which is considered to be the most deprived urban area in Ireland, he considers that there has been undue delay in making resources available through the National Poverty Committee.

An application seeking approval of a project in the north central area of Dublin was received in my Department from the National Committee on Pilot Schemes to Combat Poverty on 29 December 1977. I approved the project on 3 February 1978 and I do not, therefore, agree that there has been undue delay in making resources available through the Combat Poverty Committee. I have no reason to believe that any undue delay occurred in the negotiations, which were of a complicated nature, between the committee and the representatives of the local community.

246.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the local management committee in Dublin North Central sought grants for 1978 from the National Poverty Committee for a number of small projects, including a training project; if these grants were allocated; and, if not, why.

I understand that community representatives in the Dublin north centre city area sought grants from the National Committee on Pilot Schemes to Combat Poverty for some small projects including a training project. Of these, one has been approved by the committee. In the other cases the committee were either not satisfied on the information furnished that the funding of the projects was appropriate or had not been suplied with sufficient information to enable them to give a positive decision.

247.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the sum of £30,000 which was allocated by the National Poverty Committee to the Dublin North Central Community Action Project was used in full; and, if not, why.

As I stated in reply to Question No. 245, an appliction seeking approval of a project in the north central area of Dublin was received in my Department from the National Committee on Pilot Schemes to Combat Poverty on 29 December 1977. The project was approved by me on 3 February 1978. As the project has only been just approved, no expenditure has yet been incurred on it.

248.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if the sum allocated in the 1977 budget of the National Poverty Committee for the renting, equipping and furnishing of a project centre in the north centre of Dublin was, in fact, used; and, if not, why.

The application seeking approval of the North Centre City Community Action Project was received in my Department on 29 December 1977 from the National Committee on Pilot Schemes to Combat Poverty and no expenditure on the project was therefore incurred in 1977.

249.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has given approval for a Combat Poverty, Community Action Project in the north centre of Dublin; and, if so, when.

I gave my approval to this project on 3 February 1978.
